Hamilton is a historic county located in central Indiana. It was formally organized on April 7, 1823 and is named after its founder, Alexander Hamilton. Before WWII, Hamilton was sparsely populated and subsisted mainly from its agricultural sector. After WWII, this county began to see a spillover of residents from its fast growing neighbor to the south, Indianapolis. Since then there has been much residential development in the area, some of the finest suburbs in the state can be found here in Hamilton County. Its county seat is Noblesville and it makes up part of the Indianapolis, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is the most affluent county in Indiana. According to 2005 census estimates, there were 240,685 residents living in Hamilton County. The city of Sheridan, located in northwest Hamilton County, is the center of population for Indiana.
